that the misguided student of Bhagavad-gītā will certainly be bewil-
dered on the path of spiritual guidance and will not be able to go back
to home, back to Godhead.”
“Our only purpose is to present this Bhagavad-gītā As It Is in order to
guide the condi oned student to the same purpose for which Kṛṣṇa de-
scends to this planet once in a day of Brahmā, or every 8,600,000,000
years. This purpose is stated in Bhagavad-gītā, and we have to accept it
as it is; otherwise there is no point in trying to understand
the Bhagavad-gītā and its speaker, Lord Kṛṣṇa. Lord Kṛṣṇa first
spoke Bhagavad-gītā to the sun-god some hundreds of millions of years
ago. We have to accept this fact and thus understand the historical
significance of Bhagavad-gītā, without misinterpreta on, on the au-
thority of Kṛṣṇa. To interpret Bhagavad-gītā without any reference to
the will of Kṛṣṇa is the greatest offense. In order to save oneself from
this offense, one has to understand the Lord as the Supreme Personality
of Godhead, as He was directly understood by Arjuna, Lord Kṛṣṇa’s first
disciple. Such understanding of Bhagavad-gītā is really profitable and
authorized for the welfare of human society in fulfilling the mission of
life. “(Bg Preface, p. XVlll)
The most important quality of either an instruc ng guru or an ini a ng
guru is that he simply repeats the words of Krishna accurately. He also
validates his explana ons with direct quotes from the Bhagavad-gita
and the Srimad Bhagavatam. The Bhagavad-gita is Lord Krishna, the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, explaining about Himself, the living
en es, the material world, me and man’s real duty in life and the
Srimad Bhagavatam is the statements made by pure devotees about
Lord Krishna and these five truths. These are the five fundamental
metaphysical truths that everyone needs correct answers to in order to
surrender to God’s will as Arjuna did. A genuine guru can repeat Krish-
na’s answers to these ques ons if he is actually following himself the
rules and regula ons of devo onal service and taking con nual in-
struc ons from his own bona fide gurus, instructors and ini ator. One
may have one or more instruc ng gurus, but only one ini a ng guru.
The two gurus never contradict each other. They work together coop-
era vely to dispel the illusion of the aspirant and lead him on the right-
eous path of pure devo on to Lord Krishna.
