Spiritual knowledge is not achieved by academic
study. It is revealed to one who sincerely surrenders
to the will of God through service and love. Lord
Krishna says, “To those who are constantly devoted
to serving Me with love, I give the understanding by
which they can come to Me.” (Bg 10.10) The process
of spiritual revelation begins by submitting oneself to
hearing from genuine Vedic authorities. Lord Krishna
confirms this when He says, “Just try to learn the
truth by approaching a spiritual master. Inquire from
him submissively and render service unto him. The
self-realized souls can impart knowledge unto you
because they have seen the truth.” This is further
confirmed in the Svetasvatara Upanisad, “One who
has unflinching devotion for the Supreme Lord
and is directed by the spiritual master, in whom he
has similar unflinching faith, can see the Supreme
Personality of Godhead by revelation.” (SU 6.23) One
cannot understand Krishna by mental speculation.
For one who does not take personal training under
the guidance of a bona fide spiritual master, it is
impossible to even begin to understand Krishna.
