Narasingha kavaca homam for protection of Children
on Sunday, May 10th 6:00pm to 7:00pm
The Narasingha kavaca mantras appear in the Brahmanda Purana. It is said that Prahlada Maharaj spoke these mantras to vanguish all kinds of impediments and provide protection for advancing in spiritual life. A kavaca is a protective armor put in place by sacred mantras. The priest recites these mantras while the person asking for special protection touches different parts of his body.
The purpose of the kavaca mantras is to protect a person from extraneous difficulties. In the present age, Kali-yuga, the need for a kavaca mantra is less important than constant chanting of the Mahamantra, Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare/ Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare. However, one may chant the Narasingha kavaca mantras to help himself in devotional practices. Likewise, the Gayatri mantra is also chanted daily for the same purpose. These mantras are used not to diminish our faith in the Mahamantra, but to clear away obstacles and increase our faith that simply by chanting Hare Krishna one can attain pure love of Krishna. In the Holy Scriptures, it is said, "Simply by chanting the Holy Names of Krishna one can obtain freedom from material existence. Indeed, simply by chanting the Hare Krishna mantra one will be able to see the lotus feet of the Lord." (Cc. Adi-lila 7.73)
The chanting of kavaca mantras is not as important as chanting the Holy Names of Krishna and Rama which is the most potent form of nama bhajana. The kavaca mantras are for clearing external karmic factors that may be obstacles in our spiritual life. Just as we clothe ourselves for protection against the elements, but the clothing is external to ourselves. The most important thing is to connect our eternal soul with Lord Krishna, the supreme eternal, through devotional service and chanting the pure names of the Lord. All our faith should be in the Holy Mahamantra, Lord Krishna and our spiritual master. With this in mind, we may accept the kavaca mantras to help us in our service and chanting of the Holy Names of the Lord.
Topmost devotees like Queen Kunti think, "Dangers in life may affect me, but I will tolerate them. I shall continue with my service inspite of them." The pure devotees see everything that may happen, either good or bad, as the mercy of Lord Krishna. As long as we are not on this topmost level of devotion, we may take help from the kavaca mantras to diminish certain karmic reactions from our past life but without diminishing our faith in the Mahamantra. Ultimately, the Mahamantra Hare Krishna can do this as well as carry us back to Godhead when chanted with faith and devotion.
The Narasingha kavaca Homam will be performed Sunday, May 10th especially for the benefit of all our children and everyone else who would like to participate. After the ceremony, we will give each child a silver kavaca with the holy mantras inscribed within for their further protection. The silver kavaca can be worn as a protective amulet around the neck or tied with a soft string around the arm as is often done in India. We invite everyone to participate as a sponsor of this homan with a suggested donation of $ 21.

Our mothers are wise and precious. Our mothers sacrifice for the well being of their children and family. We cannot repay them for their dedicated service. But we can express our appreciation and love by honoring them on Mother's Day.
